TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team opened conference play with a sweep of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 6 RHIT 5
Mitchell Roether went 3-3 in game one, including a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to take the lead. Roether scored one run with five RBI and two walks.
Cayman Huntsman started the game on the mound, and threw five innings with two earned runs off two hits and seven strikeouts. Vinny Witte earned his first win of the season with a perfect eighth inning, and
Garret Odey earned a save with one baserunner allowed in the ninth.
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the ninth, Earlham scored two straight singles to open the frame. After two outs, Roether delivered his go-ahead homer to left field to lift the Quakers ahead 6-5.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 15 RHIT 2
Noah Rosato went 4-5 in game two with two home run and five RBI. Roether scored three hits with two doubles and a homer, and two RBI. As a team, the Quakers homered five times in the contest.
Casey Blevins went a complete seven innings with two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Jackson McFarland got the Quakers on the board in the top of the third inning with a solo homer to right field.
Ian Bullis and Rosato then went back-to-back with solo shots to right field for a 3-0 Quaker lead.
Earlham notched three runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning after a leadoff walk for
Chris Barnett.
Sean Jeffries hit an RBI-double to the right-center gap, and Bullis and Rosato both earned an RBI on balls sent to the outfield.
Tucker Williams brought
Jonathan Jimenez home on a sacrifice fly after the Quaker center fielder led off the inning with a walk. Barnett then scored on an infield groundout by Jeffries.
Trailing 8-0, the Engineers scored one run on a triple in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Roether led off the top of the sixth with a homer and the Quakers piled on six runs on five hits in the top of the seventh, including a three-run shot by Rosato.
In the preseason coaches poll, Rose-Hulman was selected to finish second in the conference, garnering 65 votes in the poll.
The Quakers turn around to host Hanover College tomorrow for a doubleheader in Sadler Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
