Softball splits midweek matchup with Centre

RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College softball team split a weeknight doubleheader with Centre College on Thursday in Ellie Bewley Stadium. 

GAME ONE: EARLHAM 8 CENTRE 13

Tatum Rickert threw four innings to open the game with two earned runs and three strikeouts. 

Bo Shelton led the Quaker offense with three hits, two RBI, a double and one run scored. Malaya Tanglao went 2-3 with two runs scored, one RBI and two walks. 

After Centre opened the top of the first inning with two runs scored, the Quakers posted five runs on six hits in the bottom of the first inning. Jade Green led off the frame with a single up the middle, Shelton then scored the first RBI for the Quakers on a double to center field. Shelton and Shelby Hill executed a double steal for the second run of the inning. Michaela King hit a single to left field with the bases loaded, and Tiffany Sowder added two more runs with a single to right field. 

Trailing 5-2, the Colonels scored nine runs on seven hits and an error in the top of the fifth inning.

Shelton got back two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning with a two-run double, and Centre added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

GAME TWO: EARLHAM 18 CENTRE 3 (5 Innings)

Shelby Messer threw a complete game with five innings pitched, three earned runs and two strikeouts. 

Shelton led the Quakers in game two, going 2-3 with six RBI, three runs scored, a double and a home run. Emmerie Stump went 3-3 with three doubles, five RBI and two runs scored. Macie Ferguson scored two hits with three runs scored and two steals. 

Stump's first plate appearance of the game resulted in a two-run double to left field. Hill then added a third run in the first inning with a single to right field. 

Five hits plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning starting with an RBI single by Ashley Lewis. Stump earned one RBI on a double to center field, and Shelton brought in two runs on a bunt attempt with an error on the Colonels. 

Leading 8-0, the Quakers plated seven runs on six hits in the bottom of the third inning. Stump's third double of the game brought home a pair of runs to get the scoring started, and Shelton scored Stump with a double to center field. Mack Harvey earned an RBI with a single to right field to kick off three straight RBI-hits. 

Centre scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to trail 15-2. 

Shelton rounded out the scoring for the Quakers with a three-run home run off the scoreboard in right field in the bottom of the fourth inning. 

Earlham will begin conference play on Saturday at Bluffton University. The HCAC doubleheader is slated to start at 1 pm. On Sunday, the Quakers will travel to Trine University to take on the defending NCAA Champions with a doubleheader starting at 1 pm.
