ANDERSON, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team split a doubleheader at Anderson University on Sunday afternoon to remain atop the HCAC standings.
GAME ONE: EARLHAM 7 ANDERSON 4
Cayman Huntsman went eight innings in game one to earn his third win of the season. The junior hurler allowed six hits with three earned runs while striking out seven.
Hayden Scalf earned a save with a clean ninth inning.
Sean Jeffries went 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Noah Wagster tallied a hit, and stole four bases.
A pair of Quaker errors in the bottom of the first inning helped lead to a three-run inning for the Ravens, which included a two-run home run.
Austin Dick hit a one-out single in the top of the second inning, and came home on a single by Jeffries later in the frame. The Ravens added their final run of the game in the bottom of the second.
Trailing 4-1, the Quaker bats came to life in the top of the fourth inning.
Dylan Rieck hit a one-out double to score Dick after the third baseman was hit by a pitch. Jeffries then scored Rieck on a single down the right field line to bring the Quakers within one run of the lead.
Jonathan Jimenez plated three runs with his third home run of the season, giving the Quakers a 6-4 lead.
Evan Duncan came into the game as a pinch runner in the top of the seventh inning, and stole second base with one out. The speedy outfielder then stole third base, and came home on an errant throw by the catcher for the final run of the game.
GAME TWO: EARLHAM 5 ANDERSON 6
Lane Willoughby went five innings in game two, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
Garret Odey was handed the loss with three innings pitched and one earned run.
Rieck went 2-3 in game two with a run scored and an RBI. Chris Barnet tallied two hits and a walk.
A two-run homer put the hosts ahead in the bottom of the first inning.
Earlham brought in a run in the top of the third after a leadoff walk by Rieck. Jimenez placed a single to the left side for the first Quaker RBI. Anderson responded with a run in the bottom of the third.
The Ravens scored two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead 5-1.
A leadoff walk by
Mitchell Roether in the top of the sixth inning led to a Quaker run after an RBI-single by Wagster.
The Quakers then plated three runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally and tie at 5-5.
Jackson McFarland reached base on an error, and the Ravens loaded the bases on walks. Rieck hit a one-out single, and
Caelan Rogers scored on a passed ball for the second run of the frame. Jeffries then hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate the tying run. With two outs and two runners on, Jimenez hit a deep fly ball that was caught by the Anderson right fielder while bouncing off the fence to end the inning.
The Ravens then led off the bottom of the eighth with a go-ahead home run for the final score of the game.
Leading the conference at 13-2, Earlham hosts Transylvania University tomorrow for a doubleheader in Sadler Stadium that will likely decide the top seed in the HCAC tournament. Transylvania comes in at 12-2 after sweeping Franklin College on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm.
