RICHMOND, Ind. – The Earlham College women's tennis team scored a 5-2 win over Anderson University in the first round of the HCAC Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.
Earlham swept all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 2,
Vanessa Akuaku and
Lawrencia Manu got the ball rolling with a 6-3 victory. The doubles point was secured by
Ava Marroni and
Mackenzie Davis, who initially found themselves trailing 1-4 but secured a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Natalee McCann and
Paige Hobbs were the last pair on and earned a tight 7-5 win at the 1 doubles spot.
In singles, Earlham needed just three points to clinch.
Lawrencia Manu delivered yet another strong performance at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win, and remains unbeaten in conference play.
Freshman
Ava Marroni picked up a crucial 6-2, 6-2 victory at the sixth spot putting the Quakers within one point.
The match was clinched at No. 1, where HCAC standout
Vanessa Akuaku defeated a strong all-conference opponent in Ella Frantz 6-3 7-5.
Paige Hobbs also added a three-set win at No. 5 (6-3, 3-6, 6-2) to seal the teams 5-2 result.
With the win, the Quakers advance to the HCAC Semifinals against Transylvania on Saturday in Indianapolis.
