KOKOMO, Ind. – The Earlham College baseball team won its first-round game in the HCAC Tournament 10-3 over Anderson University on Thursday in Kokomo.
Cayman Huntsman picked up the win, tossing seven complete innings with three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Hayden Scalf threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit and one walk.
Jackson McFarland went 2-4 with two runs scored, four RBI and a home run.
Austin Dick went 2-5 with three RBI, a home run and two runs scored.
Anderson plated two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning, but were then shutout until the top of the sixth.
Sean Jeffries led off the bottom of the first with a single, and two straight free passes loaded the bases with no outs. McFarland hit a single to bring two runs home and tie the game.
Noah Wagster hit a bunt for a single to load the bases again, but the Ravens tallied three straight outs to escape the inning.
Freshman
Chris Barnett, who was just named to the first team All-HCAC, earned a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth inning. The shortstop then took second and third on wild pitches before
Dylan Rieck took first on a walk. Both runners then advanced on another wild pitch, giving the Quakers a 3-2 lead.
A leadoff homer in the top of the sixth inning tied the game for Anderson.
Mitchell Roether hit a one-out double to get things started in the bottom of the seventh inning, setting the table for a two-run home run by McFarland. Rieck also brought home a run with an outfield single for a 6-3 lead.
Jeffries got a free pass to first to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning, and scored on a single by Wagster. Dick then nailed a three-run home run to left field for the final runs of the game.
The Quakers will be back in action at Kokomo Municipal Stadium tomorrow for day two of the HCAC Tournament. Earlham will battle either Rose-Hulman or Transylvania at 4:30 pm in the winner's bracket.
