Volleyball picks up road win at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Earlham College volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win at Heidelberg University on Tuesday evening.

Caylee Brandes had a standout night offensively, scoring a team-high 17 kills with only three errors for a .400 attack percentage. Brandes also collected 10 digs defensively. Sadie Mae Calma scored 15 kills, swinging .385 with 12 assists and 13 digs. 

Emma Ledford led the setters with a career-high 25 assists and 16 digs. Libero Madison Bizjak brought in a team-high 18 digs. 

As a team, the Quakers scored 51 kills with a .293 attack percentage, but the third set proved troublesome. Earlham hit just .029 in the frame with six attacking errors. 

The Quakers ran away in set one, opening up a 22-9 lead with a hot start to the match. The Student Princes held their own in set two, but a 7-1 run put the guests up 18-11. Heidelberg tried to mount a late charge, but Brandes ended the frame with a kill for a 25-21 final score. 

Leading 16-12 in the third set, Heidelberg went on a 9-0 run to win its only set of the evening. The Student Princes scored three aces and four kills in the run. Earlham then brought a swift end to the match in set four, jumping out to an 18-4 run before the Student Princes finally made some ground. Earlham ended the frame on a 4-1 run to take the match. 

The Quakers will be back in action this weekend, hosting the Dr. Bill Brandes Memorial Tournament in Druley Performance Gym. Earlham takes on Austin College at 5 pm on Friday to open the tournament.
