Beau Smith is in his fifth season as an assistant baseball coach at Earlham in 2020-21.
The Quakers’ pitching coach, Smith coached Walter Talcott to Second Team All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) honors in 2018. The Quakers posted an HCAC-best 3.56 team ERA over the course of the 2018 season, ranked 39th among Division III leaders.
Smith mentored Howie Smith to HCAC Most Outstanding Pitcher honors in 2017. The Earlham pitching staff finished the 2017 campaign with a 4.70 ERA under Smith, tops in the HCAC during conference play. In addition, Smith helped lead the Quakers to the 2017 NCAA Division III tournament.
Smith came to Earlham from Thiel College (Pa.) where he spent three seasons as an assistant coach. Under his tutelage, Thiel led the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) in strikeouts and saves while finishing in the top half of the league in earned run average. He was also named an Associated Scout for the Kansas City Royals in 2014.
Prior to Thiel, Smith served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Mount Union, in 2013. The Purple Raiders won their first Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) title since 1970 during that season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Regional for the first time in program history.
Smith earned three varsity letters at Mount Union as a pitcher. He led the team in innings pitched twice and was honored with Academic All-OAC honors. Since 2013, Smith has coached in both the Beach Collegiate Baseball League and the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
A 2012 graduate of Mount Union with a bachelor's degree in physical education, Smith furthered his education with a master’s degree in college athletic administration from Coker College in 2015.
