Quakers Beat Manchester 67-62 in Overtime

RICHMOND, Ind. The Earlham College women's basketball team needed an extra session on Saturday as the Quakers responded with a 67-62 victory over Manchester College on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

 

With the score tied 53-53 at the end of regulation, the Quakers fought through an early deficit in the overtime to take the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Jessica Wooden to make it 62-60 with 1:50 remaining in the non-conference contest.

 

From that point, the Quakers ended the game with a 5-2 run. Nikki Darrett hit a pair of free throws at the 1:34 mark to make it 64-60. Starr Gary provided the finishing touch with a basket and a free throw with four seconds left.

 

The Quakers had four players in double figures led by Darrett, who had 14 points and team-highs in rebounds with seven and assists with seven.


Gary ended the day with 13 points, while Michelle Miranda tossed in 12 points. Wooden finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

 

Earlham fell behind early in the contest 9-2 before coming back to tie the game at 14-14. Later in the opening period the Quakers led 20-18 before the Spartans rallied to end the half with 10 straight points. Manchester led 28-20 at intermission.

 

Down 53-47 late in the second half, Earlham caught the Spartans (0-2) with a pair of 3-pointers by Miranda and Gary to tie the contest at 53-53 and send it to overtime.

 

Earlham (1-1) visits Bluffton University on Tuesday. The non-conference affair gets underway at 7 p.m.
