RICHMOND, Ind. — The
Earlham College women's basketball team played a close contest on Wednesday night as the Quakers battled
Wittenberg University in a 66-61 loss on
Schuckman Court in the Athletics and
Wellness Center.
The North Coast Athletic Conference contest was tight early before the Tigers (11-6, 9-0) scored seven straight points to gain an advantage.
The game was tied 11-11 with 11:32 left in the opening period before
Wittenberg grabbed its 18-11 lead a few minutes later. Earlham fought back to close the gap to 31-27 by intermission.
In the second half,
Wittenberg (11-6, 9-0) widened its margin only to see the Quakers fight back.
Princess Darnell scored at the 11:08 mark to pull the Quakers to within 44-42. Unfortunately for Earlham, the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a 54-42 lead with 7:34 remaining.
Earlham was able to comeback to make it 64-61 in the final seconds when
Kate Franks drilled a 3-pointer, but the Tigers hit a pair of free throws at the end of the contest.
Nikki Darrett led the Quakers with 22 points and six rebounds. Franks finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
Jayana Sims contributed eight points to go with her team-high totals of five assists and three steals.
The Quakers (2-16, 1-8) are on the road Saturday at
Oberlin College. The NCAC contest gets underway at 1 p.m.
