CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — A surge late in the first half by Wabash College on Friday night hurt the Earlham College men's basketball team as the Quakers fell 73-58 to the Little Giants.
Both teams had early leads before the Little Giant Tip-off Classic contest was tied 8-8 with 13:45 remaining in the opening period.
From that point, the Quakers fought their way to a 15-10 advantage when
Justin Barger (Ellettsville, IN, Edgewood) hit a 3-pointer at the 11:44 mark of the first half.
Wabash (2-0) battled back to tie the game at 15-15 with 9:40 left before
Marcus Bledsoe (Indianapolis, IN, Ritter) was able to put the Quakers back on top 17-15 at 9:22.
The Little Giants scored the next nine points to take a 24-17 lead.
Kyle Tucker (Vincennes, IN, Lincoln) stopped the run for the Quakers with a basket at the 5:02 mark to make it 24-19. Unfortunately for the Quakers, Wabash finished the half with a 17-7 run to lead 41-26 at the intermission.
Eventually in the second half, Earlham closed the gap to 55-45 when Tucker drilled a 3-pointer with 8:43 remaining in the non-conference affair.
The Quakers then cut the deficit to 57-50 when
Josh Green (Campbellsburg, IN, West Washington) hit a pair of free throws with 6:40 left to play.
However, an 11-0 Wabash run made 68-50 with 3:15 left and the Quakers couldn't recover.
In just his second game for the Quakers, Green led the squad with 18 points.
Colton Bragg (Richmond, IN, Richmond) added 10 points.
Marty Broderick (Mooresville, IN, Mooresville),
Ryan Taylor (Martinsville, IN, Martinsville) and
Dustin Rusk (Frankfort, IN, Clinton Prairie) finished with six points each. Broderick led the Quakers with eight rebounds with Rusk pulling down six rebounds.
The Quakers (0-2) return to action on Saturday in their final contest of the Little Giant Tip-off Classic against DePauw University at 1 p.m.
