TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Nikki Darrett scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough as the Earlham College women's basketball team fell to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 65-57 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair.
"We played well and we competed the whole game," Earlham Head Coach Liana Coutts said. "We're continuing to get better with every game we play. Nikki Darrett played very well and had a double-double."
Rose-Hulman led 5-0 early in the first half, before the Quakers bounced back to go on top 6-5 when
Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) drilled a 3-pointer with 14:50 remaining.
The teams swapped leads with Earlham eventually working its way to a 19-12 advantage after
Christyan Cooksey (Evansville, IN, Bosse) hit a 3-pointer at 9:10.
Late in the half, the Engineers (3-3, 2-1) went back in front before Darrett hit a 3-pointer to make it 31-31 at intermission.
In the second half, the contest was tied four times with neither team leading by more than four points. The final tie of the game came with 6:45 left when it was 48-48.
Rose-Hulman went on a 9-2 run to lead 57-50 with 3:33 remaining in the contest. From that moment, the Quakers got to within six points twice with the last time coming on a pair of free throws by
Princess Darnell (Greenwood, IN, Bishop Chatard), which made it 59-53 with 1:30 left.
Cooksey tossed in nine points for the Quakers.
Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) and
Desire Hough (Bethlehem, PA, Saucon Valley) added six points each, while Hough had three blocks.
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) contributed five steals and three assists.
The Quakers (0-8, 0-3) entertain Anderson University on Saturday. The HCAC contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center gets underway at 3 p.m.
