BLUFFTON, Ohio — A second half run by Bluffton University was the difference on Saturday as the Earlham College women's basketball team fell to the Beavers 60-40.
After trailing 32-27 at halftime of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair, the Quakers gave up five straight points to start the second period to fall behind 37-27 with 18:14 remaining in the contest.
The Quakers fought back to close the gap to six points twice with the last time coming at the 11:36 mark when
Desire Hough (Bethlehem, PA, Saucon Valley) scored to make it 44-38.
Unfortunately, the decisive run occurred at that time as the Beavers (6-9, 3-5) scored the next 11 points to build a 55-38 advantage. Bluffton finished the contest with a 5-2 run to earn the victory.
Early Leads for EC
The Quakers got behind early 7-3 before they had an 11-0 run of their own to take a 14-7 lead when
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) scored at 11:15 of the opening stanza.
Bluffton worked its way back in front 17-16 at the 8:13 mark, but the Quakers responded to take a 25-22 lead after
Natasha Norman (St. Louis, MO, Vashon) score with 3:48 left in the first half. The Beavers went back on top before Sneed hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 27-27. Bluffton finished the period with five straight points to lead at intermission.
Sneed led the Quakers with 14 points, while Hough ended with eight points.
Brittany Combs (Columbus, OH, Bishop Hartley) tossed in seven points.
Christyan Cooksey (Evansville, IN, Bosse) led Earlham with 12 rebounds and
Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) pulled down 11 rebounds.
Earlham (0-15, 0-8) entertains Transylvania University on Wednesday. The HCAC contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center begins at 7:30 p.m.
