RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's basketball team led early on Wednesday night, but Manchester College was able to respond as the Spartans posted a 63-42 win over the Quakers.
After falling behind 7-3, the Quakers scored five straight points to take the lead when
Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) scored to make it 8-7 with 14:54 left in the opening period of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Manchester (9-9, 7-4) answered with an 8-2 run to grab a 15-10 advantage at the 12:39 mark. Earlham bounced back with an 8-2 rally of its own.
Brittany Combs (Columbus, OH, Bishop Hartley) capped the run with a basket to make it 18-17 with 10:17 remaining in the first half.
The game stayed tight as the Spartans were able to regain the lead to reach intermission on top 30-27.
The Spartans began the second half with a 7-2 stretch to lead 37-29. Moments later, Earlham's
Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) drilled a 3-pointer to make it 37-32 with 15:11 left and the Quakers couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) led the Quakers with 15 points, while
Desire Hough (Bethlehem, PA, Saucon Valley) added nine points, eight rebounds and four blocks.
Christyan Cooksey (Evansville, IN, Bosse) tossed in six points with three assists for the Quakers. Long finished with a game-high nine rebounds.
Earlham (0-18, 0-11) visits Anderson University on Saturday. The HCAC affair gets underway at 3 p.m.

N. MANCHESTER, Ind. — Despite having four players reach double figures in scoring on Wednesday, the Earlham College men's basketball team dropped a 75-57 decision at Manchester College.
Kyle Tucker led the Quakers with 13 points in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.
Ryan Taylor and Colton Bragg tossed in 12 points each, while Marcus Bledsoe added 10 points.
Josh Green handed out five assists for Earlham as teammates Justin Barger and Dustin Rusk topped the squad with four rebounds apiece.
Taylor gave the Quakers an early 3-2 lead after hit a 3-pointer with 18:48 left in the opening stanza. The Spartans (12-6, 8-3) followed with five straight points before Taylor drilled another trey to make it 7-6 with 17:40 left.
Manchester went on a 12-2 run to build a 19-8 advantage by the 11:52 mark of the first half. From that point, the Spartans were able to go on to a 40-20 lead by intermission.
In the second half, the Quakers battled back to within 15 points three times with the last coming when Bragg scored to make it 58-43 with 8:15 remaining in the game.
The Quakers (2-16, 0-11) return to action Saturday at home against Anderson University. The HCAC match-up on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center begins at 3 p.m.
