RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's basketball team started the new year on Monday with a 78-68 loss to the College of Wooster on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) led the Quakers with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four assists, while
Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) tossed in 17 points.
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) added nine points and four assists.
Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) grabbed 10 rebounds.
Both teams had early leads in the non-conference contest.
Earlham led 7-4 when Darrett scored at 17:28 of the opening period. The Scots (2-10) followed with a run to take a 14-11 lead at the 13:45 mark.
After
Princess Darnell (Greenwood, IN, Bishop Chatard) tied the game at 14-14 with a 3-pointer at 13:02, the Quakers took their largest lead of the night with five straight points. Sneed hit a pair of free throws and Darrett drilled a 3-pointer to make it 19-14 with 11:55 remaining in the first half.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, Wooster scored the next 10 points to build a 24-19 advantage with 7:49 left. The Scots widened their margin to 39-24 by the 4:42 mark before the Quakers rallied to trail 46-39 by intermission.
In the second half, Wooster was able to pull away to a 64-42 lead with 12:37 left in the contest.
The Quakers fought back, but they were only able to close the gap to 10 points, which they did six times the rest of the way.
Earlham (0-11) visits the College of Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game begins at 5:30 p.m.
