Quakers Open Season on the Road

Box Score WOOSTER, Ohio — The Earlham College women's basketball team had three players in double figures on Saturday as the Quakers opened the season under new head coach Melissa Johnson.

Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) led Earlham with 14 points and three assists as the Quakers fell 57-42 to Muskingum University in the Nan Nichols Classic at the College of Wooster.

Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) and Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) tossed in 10 points each for the Quakers. Darrett finished with a double-double for the 10th time in her career as she grabbed 10 rebounds.

"I'm extremely proud of the effort, the mental toughness and overall tenacity the players showed," Johnson said. "We never gave up despite the fact we could find the bottom of the net. We had a very cold shooting day, but we were able to stay in the game with our defensive effort."

The Muskies (1-1) took an early 9-2 lead with 16:16 left in the first half before the Quakers rallied in the non-conference contest.

Sneed hit a 3-pointer to make it 9-5 at 15:21. Muskingum pulled away again, but the Quakers had an answered and went on top 14-13 when Lauren Jackson (Upper Marlboro, MD, Thomas Sprigg Wootton) scored at the 8:03 mark. Sneed nailed another trey to put the Quakers in front 17-13 with 7:25 left.

Muskingum scored the next 13 points to build a 26-17 lead just before halftime. Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) scored the final basket of the opening stanza with eight seconds remaining to make it 26-19 at intermission.

In the second half, Muskingum worked its way to a nine-point advantage before Earlham closed the gap to three points on three different occasions with the last time coming at 43-37 with 3:57 to go when Darrett scored.
 
From that point, the Muskies finished the contest with a 14-5 run to take control of the affair.

Earlham (0-1) plays the University of Northwestern Ohio on Sunday at Wooster. The non-conference game gets underway at 1 p.m.
