Quakers Pick Up HCAC Win at Anderson

Box Score ANDERSON, Ind. — A strong effort in the second half was the difference for the Earlham College women's basketball team on Saturday as the Quakers defeated Anderson University 53-48 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest.

"It was like a different team," Earlham Head Coach Melissa Johnson said. "They believed in themselves and responded."

"Following the loss to Franklin College last week, we met and decided that this was going to be a turning point for us," Johnson added. "The effort was phenomenal and it was a great statement that they made."

Trailing 30-22 at halftime, the Quakers rallied to take the lead with a 14-point run to start the second period.

Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) put the Quakers on top 32-30 with a 3-pointer at the 15:56 mark. She followed with another basket and Earlham led 34-30 with 15:16 left to play.

Anderson (3-4, 2-1) regained the lead at 37-36 with 11:12 on the clock.

As it turned out, the Quakers took the lead for good when Sneed scored to make it 38-37 with 10:20 remaining.

Earlham was able to build an eight-point advantage twice the rest of the way with the last time coming at the 4:00 mark when Princess Darnell (Greenwood, IN, Bishop Chatard) scored to make it 51-43.

From that point, the Quakers were able to hold off the Ravens for their first HCAC win of the season.

"It was definitely and team victory," Johnson said. "Everybody that came in to the game contributed and we were able to use our depth. I was very proud of our team."

Sneed led the Quakers with 15 points and seven rebounds, while Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) tossed in 10 points with four rebounds and three steals.

Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) and Emily Sells (Winchester, IN, Winchester) tossed in seven points each. Sells also had four assists.

Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) and Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) contributed four points and four rebounds apiece, while Karmell Brown had four points.

Quick Start

The Quakers had a pair of 3-pointers to begin the game by Sneed and Darrett before the Ravens scored.

Earlham eventually led by six points on three occasions with the last coming at 12:27 of the opening period when Sells drilled a 3-pointer.

Unfortunately for the Quakers, Anderson responded by finishing the first half with a 20-6 run to set the stage for Earlham's second-half comeback.

Next up for the Quakers (2-7, 1-3) is a trip to California. Earlham is at Whittier College on Monday at 7 p.m. (Indiana time). On Tuesday, the Quakers visit the California Institute of Technology for a contest at 3 p.m.
