Quakers Open HCAC Schedule

Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Earlham College women's basketball team opened play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday with a 70-60 loss at the College of Mount St. Joseph.

Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Quakers, while Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) tossed in 14 points. Altman's previous best effort was 17 points against the College of Wooster last season.

Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) finished with eight points and three assists.

Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) had a team-high eight rebounds and also contributed three assists. Long and Brittany Combs (Columbus, OH, Bishop Hartley) pulled down seven rebounds each.

The Lions (2-5, 2-0) built an advantage of 13-7 with 12:17 left in the first half before the Quakers made a run to take the lead.

With the next eight points, Earlham grabbed a 15-13 lead after Altman capped the rally with a basket at the 9:40 mark.

The Quakers eventually led 24-17 when Long scored with 6:32 remaining in the opening stanza.

Earlham was able to hold on and lead 32-27 at intermission.

A slow start in the second half hurt the Quakers. The Lions had a 6-0 run to go on top 33-32 at 18:32, forcing the Quakers to call a timeout.

Sneed scored on Earlham's next possession to put the Quakers in front 34-32 at the 18:29 mark.

Howver, six straight points by the Lions gave Mount St. Joseph a 39-34 lead at 16:52.

The Quakers were able to close the gap to 41-39 with 15:42 left to play before the Lions went on another run to lead 50-39 at 9:51.

From that point, the Quakers cut the deficit to three on two occaisions with the last coming at 2:24 when Altman hit a 3-pointer to make it 60-57.

Earlham (1-5, 0-1) returns to action on Wednesday at Transylvania University. The HCAC affair in Lexington gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
