LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Earlham College women's basketball team visited Kentucky on Wednesday night as the Quakers fell 73-59 to Transylvania University.
Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) and Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) led the Quakers with 14 points each in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair.
Darrett finished with five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Sneed led the Quakers with four steals.
Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) and Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) tossed in seven points apiece. Brown pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds and Altman contributed eight rebounds.
Brown's effort was the most rebounds by an Earlham player since Darrett grabbed 18 at St. Mary-of-the-Woods College on Nov. 23, 2010. Her previous best was six rebounds against the College of Mount St. Joseph on Feb. 5, 2011.
The Pioneers (2-4, 1-1) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before the Quakers were able to respond as they took a 7-6 lead with 15:54 left in the opening period on a basket by Darrett.
Transylvania regained the lead, but Brown hit 1-of-2 free throws to put the Quakers back on top 13-12 at the 13:26 mark.
Earlham eventually built a 20-16 advantage when Sneed scored at 9:43.
The Pioneers rallied with nine straight points to take a 25-20 lead with 7:32 remaining in the first half.
Again, the Quakers had an answer with a 6-0 run capped by a score by Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville), which made it 26-25 at 4:16.
The contest was later tied 30-30 with 2:07 left. Neither squad to find the basket from that point until the Pioneers scored with six seconds left in the frame to lead 32-30 at intermission.
In the second half, Transylvania began with a 13-8 run to widen the margin to 45-38 with 14:20 left in the game. The Pioneers continued the run and later led 52-40 at 9:10.
The Quakers cut the deficit with a 7-0 run capped by a basket by Sneed at 7:19 to make it 52-47.
Transylvania then put together the decisive rally to go on top 64-47 with 3:01 left to play and the Pioneers were able to maintain their distance the rest of the way.
Earlham (1-6, 0-2) entertains Franklin College on Saturday. The HCAC contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center begins at 1 p.m.
