TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College men's tennis team picked up its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season on Sunday with a 5-4 win over Franklin College at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
"This was another tough match for us, but it was nice to get the first win of the spring season," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "We still did not show the mental toughness necessary to compete at the level of our capabilities."
The Quakers had a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition.
Henry Levin (Dallas, TX, Highland Park) and
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) defeated Matt Hamm and Justin Moran 8-3 at No. 1, while
Mike Von Vogt (South Bristol, ME, Lincoln Academy) and
Scott Lawrence (Letchworth, England, Cheam) won 8-4 over Jared Hunt and Justin Smith at No. 3.
In singles, the Quakers picked up three wins to take the match.
Maisey won 6-0, 6-0 over Smith at No. 2. Von Vogt posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Brandon Roberts at No. 3. Lawrence earned a 6-0, 6-1 win against Hunt at No. 4.
"It was great to see Mike and Scott both bounce back from tough losses against Rose-HUlman on Saturday," Van Zee said. "They are a going to be big part of how well we will do this season."
"We will go back to work this week in hopes of playing better next weekend against Otterbein College," Van Zee added.
Earlham (2-1, 1-1) faces Otterbein on Saturday in Dayton in a non-conference match starting at 9 a.m.
