RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over Central State University Tuesday on the EC Courts.
Earlham took a 3-0 lead after the doubles round as the Quakers played the first of their spring matches.
"It was nice to get out and start the non-traditional season for the women on the right foot," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "We have only had four practices to get prepared for the match and they came out well."
Rebecca Ogle (Indianapolis, IN, Brebeuf) and
Olivia Engle (Richmond, IN, Richmond) defeated Brandy Stewart and Aimee Woodruff 8-2 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2,
Nora Mineva (Pleven, Bulgaria, Lester B. Pearson) and
Jessica Childs (North Dighton, MA, Dighton-Rehoboth) beat Rachel Smith and Mallory Hart 8-2.
At No. 3,
Bailey Hall (Muncie, IN, Central) and
Cory Mathieu (Madison, WI, West) beat Jalisa Mixon and Jayana McClain-Kelly 8-1.
In singles, the Quakers won five of the six contests.
Ogle beat Smith 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2. At No. 3, Mineva took care of Jayana McClain-Kelly 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 4, Childs beat Hart 6-0, 6-1. Mathieu won 6-3, 6-2 over Woodruff at No. 5. Hall defeated Janay McClain-Kelly 6-0. 6-0 at No. 6.
Central State's only win came at No. 1 singles as Stewart beat Engle 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2).
"Olivia really battled against an opponent who has competed well against us over the past three years," Van Zee said. "We will get back at practices again until our next test against Capital University."
The Quakers (4-7) return to action at Capital on Saturday, April 9. The match starts at 4 p.m.
