RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Wednesday as the Quakers swept Defiance College 9-0.
"It is great to get our first win of the season as well as a Heartland Athletic Collegiate Conference victory," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "Hopefully, we can use this as momentum for this weekend and continue to get stronger as the season progresses."
The Quakers (1-2, 1-1) visit Bluffton University on Saturday for a HCAC match at 10 a.m.
On Wednesday,
Alex Softness (Atlanta, GA, Paideia School) and
Jessica Childs (Rehoboth, MA, Dighton-Rehoboth) defeated Kirsten Wieland and Catie Savage 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Olivia Engle (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and
Bailey Hall (Muncie, IN, Central) won 8-1 over Tasha Brown and Danielle Labarbera at No. 2 doubles.
At No. 3,
Vesta Davis (Brooklin, ME, George Stevens Academy) and Julia Berner-Tobin won by default.
In singles, Engle defeated Wieland 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Softness beat Savage 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.
Childs won 6-0, 6-0 over Brown at No. 3, while Berner-Tobin beat Labarbera 6-0, 6-2.
At No. 5,
Morgan Springer (Penobscot, Maine, George Stevens Academy) took care of Cassie Morris 6-0, 6-1. Davis was awarded a win by default at No. 6.
