FRANKLIN, Ind. — A 9-0 run early in the second half was the difference on Saturday as the Earlham College women's basketball team fell 81-65 to nationally-ranked Franklin College.
With the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest tied at 33-33 at 16:42 of the second half, the Grizzlies, No. 18 in the latest d3hoops.com poll, scored nine straight points to take a 42-33 lead with 14:57 left to play.
From that point, Franklin (16-1, 9-1) built a 60-41 advantage by the 7:41 mark. The Quakers responded with a 9-0 run to close the gap to 60-50 when
Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) scored with 5:32 remaining in the contest. Franklin was able to maintain its margin the rest of the way.
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) led the Quakers with 23 points and
Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) added 10 points.
Brittany Combs (Columbus, OH, Bishop Hartley) finished with nine points, while Brown and
Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) tossed in six points each.
Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) led the Quakers with six rebounds and
Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) pulled down five rebounds.
Quakers Lead at Halftime
Franklin grabbed an early 8-2 lead at 16:06 of the opening period before the Quakers rallied to cut the deficit to 15-14 when Combs scored at 12:30.
When Darrett drilled a 3-pointer at 10:39, the score was tied at 17-17.
The Grizzlies eventually led 24-17 by the 6:50 mark and still had a 30-24 edge with 3:21 left in the first half.
Earlham held Franklin scoreless the rest of the frame while getting a basket from Combs and a 3-pointer from Darrett to make it 30-29.
JaLissa Watt (St. Louis, MO, St. Elizabeth Academy) ended the half with a pair of free throws with one second on the clock to give the Quakers a 31-30 lead at intermission to set the stage for the decisive second half run by the Grizzlies.
Earlham (3-14, 1-9) visits Bluffton University on Wednesday. The HCAC contest begins at 7:30 p.m.
