EC Plays Tight HCAC Contest at Rose-Hulman

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Earlham College women's basketball team battled down to the final moments on Wednesday night as the Quakers fell 49-47 to the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) led the Quakers with 14 points in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game. She also had four rebounds.

Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) tossed in nine points for Earlham, while Brittany Combs (Columbus, OH, Bishop Hartley), Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) and Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) added five points each.

Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) finished with four points and a team-high five rebounds.

After a Rose-Hulman free throw gave the Engineers a two-point lead with 14 seconds left, the Quakers had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but Sneed's contested jumper in the lane fell short.

Rose-Hulman (4-8, 2-3) grabbed an early advantage in the opening period, but the Quakers responded by eventually going on top 5-4 when Altman scored 14:26 off an offensive rebound.

The Quakers widened their margin to five points on three occasions with the last coming when Franks made it 16-11 with 6:52 on the clock.

From that point, the Engineers ended the first half with a 13-2 run to lead 24-18 at intermission.

In the second half, Rose-Hulman started the frame with four straight point to lead 28-18 before the Quakers answered with a run of their own.

Sneed capped an 8-0 Earlham rally to make it 28-26 with 13:35 left to play.

Moments later, Darrett drilled a 3-pointer to tie the contest at 34-34 with 11:44 remaining.

Earlham led until the Engineers tied the game at 40-40 at 5:07. There were two more ties before Long gave the Quakers a 47-46 lead when she hit 1-of-2 free throws at the 1:05 mark.

Rose-Hulman scored on its next possession to take the lead for good and set the stage for Earlham's last chance.

The Quakers (3-9, 1-4) travels to Manchester College on Saturday for a HCAC contest beginning at 1 p.m.
