Quakers Face Lions in HCAC Opener

Box Score CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Earlham College women's basketball team opened play in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday with a 72-62 loss at the College of Mount St. Joseph.

The Quakers had three players in doubles figures with Kasin Spay (Muncie, IN, Delta) leading the way with 15 points.

JaLissa Watt (St. Louis, MO, St. Elizabeth Academy ) tossed in 14 points to go with nine rebounds, while Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) added 10 points.

Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for the Quakers and Emily Sells (Winchester, IN, Winchester) finished with five assists.

The Lions (1-4, 1-0) took an early 11-1 lead at the 16:43 mark of the first half.

With 12:00 left in the period, Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) scored to tie the contest at 13-13.

Spay then put the Quakers on top 16-13 with a basket and a free throw at 11:45.

The teams traded baskets and eventually tied again at 22-22 at 7:13. By intermission, the Lions were able to build a 38-30 advantage.

In the second half, the Quakers cut the deficit to 40-37 when Watt scored with 17:04 left to play.

Long brought the Quakers all the way back as she scored and then made a free throw to make it 46-46 with 14:38 remaining.

The Lions were then able to take the lead again before a pair of free throws by Spay at 11:42 closed the gap to 51-49.

Mount St. Joseph scored the next six points and later led 66-52 with 6:22 left.

Earlham was able to rally and got as close as 68-62 when Brown scored with 1:18 to go.

The Quakers (1-6, 0-1) entertains Transylvania University on Wednesday. The HCAC affair on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center is at 7:30 p.m.
