Quakers Meet Pioneers

Box Score RICHMOND, Ind. — Despite having all five starters in double figures on Wednesday night, the Earlham College women's basketball team fell short in an 84-80 decision with Transylvania University.

Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) topped the Quakers in scoring with 20 points in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.

Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) tossed in 12 points, while Emily Sells (Winchester, IN, Winchester) and Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse) added 11 points each. Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) finished with 10 points.

Sells posted team-high numbers with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Brown and Long pulled down five rebounds apiece with Sneed handing out five assists.

Earlham started out by scoring on eight of its first 10 possessions of the contest to build a 20-6 advantage when Darrett drilled a 3-pointer at 14:04 of the opening period.

The Pioneers (10-10, 8-5) eventually responded to close the gap in the high-scoring first half to 31-26 at the 9:10 mark.

The Quakers were able to widen the margin to 42-31 when Brittany Combs (Columbus, OH, Bishop Hartley) made 1-of-2 free throws with 5:23 left.

Transylvania went on a 16-5 run that allowed the Pioneers to tie the contest at 47-47 with 2:19 remaining in the half. They went on to finish the frame with a 54-50 lead at intermission.

In the second half, the Quakers were able to work their way back to the lead when Brown scored and hit then a free throw to make it 61-59 at 13:47.

At that point, the Quakers fell behind 67-61 before they fought back again to take the lead.

Danielle Altman (Carthage, IN, Knightstown) scored to put Earlham on top 74-73 with 6:51 left in the game. JaLissa Watt (St. Louis, MO, St. Elizabeth Academy ) followed with a basket at 6:20 and the Quakers led 76-73.

With 11 straight points, Transylvania went in front for good as the Pioneers led 84-76 with 2:06 left. Earlham was able to score the final four points of the contest, but that wasn't enough.

The Quakers (3-17, 1-12) visit Hanover College on Saturday. The HCAC contest begins at 1 p.m.
