RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's basketball team picked up a 56-48 victory Wednesday night as the Quakers defeated the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
"I am unbelievably proud of our effort and intensity," Earlham Head Coach Melissa Johnson said. "It was a team win and everyone contributed."
"Coming into the game we knew we had to focus on defense and rebounding," Johnson added. "We fought and scrapped and never gave up."
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) led the Quakers with 14 points and six rebounds in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
Nikki Darrett (Evansville, IN, Bosse), who moved up on Earlham's all-time scoring list, tossed in 13 points with four rebounds. Darrett now has 1,061 points in her career as she passed Shelly Holt (1997-2001) to climb to eighth place on the scoring list. Holt had 1,057 points. Next up on the list is Libby Maudlin (1982-86), who is in 7th place with 1,065 points.
Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) added nine points, five rebounds and three steals.
Princess Darnell (Greenwood, IN, Bishop Chatard) finished with eight points, while
Charvonne Long (Edwardsville, IL, Edwardsville) tied Sneed with a team-high six rebounds.
On Wednesday, the Quakers jumped out to an 8-2 advantage when
JaLissa Watt (St. Louis, MO, St. Elizabeth Academy ) scored with 16:02 left in the opening period.
Rose-Hulman (8-16, 6-11) was eventually able to battle back and tie the contest at 13-13 with 10:11 to go.
The Engineers were able to build a 19-16 advantage before Darrett was fouled shooting a 3-pointer. She nailed all three free throws to tie the score at 19-19 with 4:24 left in the half.
The game was tied two more times before halftime, but the Quakers managed to go into the intermission with a 28-26 lead.
In the second half the contest remained tight as the Engineers were able to go on top 33-32 with 14:50 left in the game.
Sneed quickly answered for Earlham with a basket at 14:04, which gave the Quakers the lead for good at 34-33.
Brown gave the Quakers their first double-digit lead when she made it 47-37 with 8:30 left to play.
Earlham's widest margin of the contest would be 12 points, which the Quakers were able to do twice, with the last time coming on a basket by Darnell with 50 seconds remaining.
The Quakers (4-20, 2-15) finish the season on Saturday at home against Manchester College. It will be Senior Day and Darrett, Darnell and
Kate Franks (Hopewell, OH, West Muskingum ) will be honored prior to the HCAC contest that starts at 1 p.m.
