RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's tennis team won its third straight match on Saturday as the Quakers beat Bluffton University 9-0.
"We have won three in a row, which is a great feat," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said. "The improvement from our first match against Franklin to the last three matches has been huge."
The Quakers grabbed a 3-0 advantage by sweeping the doubles action from the Beavers (0-5, 0-2) in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on the EC Courts.
"Our players put in a hard week of practice focusing on doubles and footwork and it really has paid off," Van Zee said. "The rest of our schedule is very tough with the top contenders in the conference, so we hope to continue to move forward."
Olivia Engle (Richmond, IN, Richmond) and
Claire Welsh (Ann Arbor, MI, Pioneer) blanked Caitlin Nearhood and Melissa Hostetler 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Jessica Childs (Rehoboth, MA, Dighton-Rehoboth) and
Anastasia Vladimirova (St. Petersburg, Russia, UWC Costa Rica) posted an 8-3 win over Ashley Jones and Tyler Jennings at No. 2.
At No. 3,
Maya Cooper (Indianapolis, IN, North Central) and
Joanne Huang (Beau Bassin, Mauritius, International) defeated Alex Fox and Marissa Radigan 8-5.
In the singles competition, Engle defeated Nearhood 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1. Welsh beat Hostetler 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.
Childs won 6-3, 6-4 over Jones at No. 3. At No. 4, Huang survived a tough first set to win 7-5, 6-2 over Fox.
Cooper beat Jennings 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Vladimirova posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Radigan at No. 6.
Earlham (3-1, 2-1) is on the road for its next HCAC match at Hanover on Wednesday. The match gets underway at 4 p.m.
