RICHMOND, Ind. — The Earlham College women's basketball team hit clutch free throws down the stretch on Saturday as the Quakers posted a 41-39 win over Manchester University on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
With the score tied 34-34 with 4:49 remaining in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference affair, the Quakers didn't need a field goal the rest of the way as they made 7-of-8 from the free throw line.
"This was a huge victory for us," Earlham Head Coach Melissa Johnson said. "We have had so many close games this season where we have really battled but came up just short."
"Going into the game, we knew we had to work for 40 minutes to get a win against a very good Manchester team," Johnson added. "We won the game on the defensive end with our intensity and pressure. It was a team effort with multiple players contributing and perfecting their role."
Bria Sneed (Indianapolis, IN, University) led the Quakers with 12 points to go with three steals.
Raven Bryant-Williams (Columbus, OH, Northland) tossed in eight points as she grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
Karmell Brown (Columbus, OH, Columbus School for Girls) contributed six points.
Manchester (5-8, 4-2) held an early advantage.
Kasin Spay (Muncie, IN, Delta) brought the Quakers closer when she scored at the 9:59 mark of the first half to make it 13-12.
The well went dry for both teams as neither scored until Sneed hit 1-of-2 free throws with 5:26 to go in the opening period.
Sneed gave the Quakers their first lead with a 3-pointer at 4:47, which made it 16-13. By intermission, the Spartans led 23-22.
In the second half, the Quakers were able to build a lead of 30-25 with 10:48 left before the Spartans came back to tie the game at 34-34 to set up Earlham's pressure free throw shooting.
"I am so proud of each and everyone of these ladies," Johnson said. "We look forward to getting back at it Wednesday against Bluffton."
The Quakers (2-11, 1-5) visit Bluffton University on Wednesday. The HCAC contest begins at 7:30 p.m.
