EC Beats Nationally-Ranked Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Earlham College men's tennis team remained unbeaten on Wednesday as the Quakers defeated nationally-ranked Denison University 5-4.

"This was such a gutsy win for us," Earlham Head Coach Adam Van Zee said of the win over the No. 27 Big Red. "To go on the road against a nationally-ranked opponent and be down 2-1 after doubles and pull it off is a testament to what the guys are made of."

"We had some big performances with Jack Ventura-Cress (Placentia, CA, El Dorado) coming back after being down a set and of course Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) winning the clincher," Van Zee added.

The match was tied at 4-4 as the teams waited for the No. 6 singles match to finish. Maisey eventually came out on top over Jackson O'GormanBean 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

"It's pretty fitting for Brad to get his 100th career victory like this," Van Zee said. "It came down to Brad to get the win. Those are situations you want your senior to be in. I couldn't be more proud of him and his teammates."

With his 100th win, Maisey became the third Earlham men's player to reach that plateau. Charlie DiLalla (112) and Adam Turner (103) are the other two.

Maisey and Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) picked up the only win in doubles for the Quakers by defeating Jeffrey LoDuca and O'GormanBean 8-4.

Ranked No. 18 in the region, the Quakers were able to respond by taking four of the six singles matches to earn the victory over Denison (2-1), which is ranked in the fifth spot in the region.

"While this is a huge win for us the season and the program overall, it doesn't change anything the rest of the way," Van Zee said. "We still have many challenging opponents in the near future and we can't have any let downs. I told the guys to enjoy the win for 24 hours and we will get back to work."

In addition to Maisey's win in singles, the Quakers got wins from Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia, International), Phillip Locklear (Springboro, OH, Springboro) and Ventura-Cress.

Bartashevich beat Juan Guerra 6-1, 6-1 and No. 1, while Locklear defeated Grant Veltman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

At No. 4, Ventura-Cress came back to post a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Andrew Marczak.

Earlham (3-0) visits Wabash College next Wednesday for non-conference match at 5 p.m.
