GREENCASTLE, Ind. — It took a ranked opponent to do it on Saturday as the Earlham men's tennis team had its seven-match winning streak broken.
The 30th ranked Quakers fell 6-3 to the University of Chicago, which is 29th in the nation. In the second match against the host Tigers, the Quakers fell 5-4 as the affair continued into early Sunday morning.
The Quakers held a 2-1 advantage after the doubles action in their first contest of the day with Chicago (6-1) at DePauw University.
Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia, International) and
Jack Ventura-Cruess (Placentia, CA, El Dorado) defeated Deepak Sabada and Krishna Ravella 8-2 at No. 1. At No. 2,
Kyle Richter (Fremont, CA, Mission San Jose) and
Phillip Locklear (Springboro, OH, Springboro) beat Ankur Bhargava and Neil Karandikar 8-5.
In singles play,
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) posted Earlham's win with a 7-5, 1-0 (default) decision over Gordon Zhang at No. 5.
Against, DePauw (2-6) the Quakers were down 2-1 after the doubles action. Bartashevich and Ventura-Cruess defeated David Moss and Reid Garlock 9-7 at No. 1.
The Quakers were able to win three contests in singles. Bartashevich outlasted Sam Miles 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-3 in the top spot. Richter beat Moss 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3.
In the No. 5 position, Maisey posted a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Garlock to move closer to the top spot on Earlham's all-time win list. He now has 110 wins leaving him just shy of Charlie DiLalla for the all-time lead at 112.
Next up for Earlham (7-2) is a trip to Florida. The first match in Orlando is on Sunday, March 17. The contest against Hobart College starts at 6 p.m.
