INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — One more win.
After a 5-0 win over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Saturday, The Earlham College men's tennis team is one victory away from a third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title.
Winners of 11 in a row and the top seed in the tournament, the Quakers (18-2) meet Transylvania University on Sunday for the championship at the West Indy Racquet Club at 10 a.m.
Transylvania (12-7) defeated Franklin College 5-0 to advance to the final round. The winner of Sunday's affair claims the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III Tournament that begins next week. Earlham won the regular season contest with the Pioneers 8-1.
Ranked ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Central Region Rankings, the Quakers grabbed a 3-0 advantage after the doubles competition with the Engineers (11-8).
Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia, International) and
Jack Ventura-Cruess (Placentia, CA, El Dorado) won 8-5 over Ben Paras and Devon Fritz at No. 1.
In the No. 2 position,
Phillip Locklear (Springboro, OH, Springboro) and
Kyle Richter (Fremont, CA, Mission San Jose, UC-Santa Cruz) posted an 8-6 victory over Nate Moore and Matthew Conrad.
Brad Maisey (Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, Tauranga Boys) and
Andrey Gavrilov (Yaroslavl, Russia, Universal) defeated Erin Miller and Randy Billingsley 8-1 at No. 3.
With the tourney matches played to decision, the Quakers needed just two more wins in singles.
Bartashevich took care of Ben Paras 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, while Maisey beat Matthew Conrad 6-1, 6-1 in the fourth spot. For Maisey, who is Earlham's all-time wins leader, it was his 131st. The other matches were not finished.
