DEFIANCE, Ohio â€" Two free throws were the difference on Wednesday night for the Earlham College women's basketball team.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, they were on the wrong end of the floor at Defiance College.
Defiance's Kelsey Tietje hit a pair of free throws with one second left to give the Yellow Jackets a 74-73 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference win over the Quakers.
It was the 11th and final lead change of the contest that also featured seven ties.
The Quakers began the night with the lead and were on top when Lexi McFarland scored at the 16:48 mark of the first half to make it 6-4.
From that point, the Quakers could only tie the game in the opening frame as the Yellow Jackets built a 43-33 advantage by the intermission.
In the second half, it took the Quakers some time but they were able to fight their way back. When Bria Sneed scored with 8:49 left, the Quakers led 60-59.
Earlham held the largest lead after that of 73-70 when Maya Luney scored with 1:31 remaining. Tietje scored then for the Yellow Jackets (7-9, 4-5) at 1:19 to set the stage for her final free throws.
Kasin Spay led the Quakers with 21 points and three steals. McFarland had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Sneed and Raven Bryant-Williams finished with nine points each. Sneed now has 1,053 in her career and trails Shelly Holt (1997-2001) on the all-time scoring list by four points. Holt is ninth in with 1.057 points. Sneed also had four assists and three steals.
Hannah Franklin added four assists.
Earlham (7-9, 3-6) is in action on Saturday at Manchester University. The HCAC game gets underway at 1 p.m.
