FRANKLIN, Ind. â€" The Earlham College women's basketball team opened 2014 on Saturday with a 67-56 loss at Franklin College.
Kasin Spay led the Quakers with 17 points in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference contest against the Grizzlies (5-6, 3-1).
Bria Sneed tossed in 14 points to go with four steals. Sneed now has 989 points in her career.
Maya Luney added eight points and five rebounds for the Quakers. Hannah Franklin and Lexi McFarland finished with five points and three assists each.
The Quakers built an early 13-4 lead at the 15:10 mark of the first half when McFarland hit a 3-pointer.
After Luney hit 1-of-2 free throws, the Quakers led 18-10 with 10:34 left in the period.
The Grizzlies fought back to tie the contest at 18-18 with 8:02 remaining.
Later in the first half, Franklin went in front 29-23 at 3:02 before the Quakers rallied to cut the deficit to 31-30 at intermission.
In the second half, both squads had small leads with the Quakers holding a 49-47 when Sneed canned a pair of free throws at 8:18.
Franklin followed with the next 10 points to lead 57-49 with 5:12 left to play. The Grizzlies were able to maintain their distance the rest of the way.
Earlham (5-6, 1-3) entertains the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday. The HCAC affair on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center gets underway at 7:30 p.m. Â
