RICHMOND, Ind. â€" A win is a win. No matter how it looks.
"I was proud that we pulled out the win," Earlham College Women's Head Basketball Coach Melissa Johnson said. "It was definitely an ugly win, as we failed to execute on both ends of the floor."
The Quakers were able to hold on Saturday as the posted a 79-73 victory over the College of Mount St. Joseph on Schuckman Court in the Athletics and Wellness Center.
After building a 42-26 advantage by halftime, the Quakers were outscored by Mount St. Joseph (2-17, 2-10) by 10 points in the second period.
Â
"As much as I would like to see us take our second half lead and make it bigger, it was also good for our team to be in the situation at the end of the game," Johnson said. "To watch our lead evaporate and then figure out how to pull off the win, I have to give our players a lot of credit for gutting it out and never giving up."
Despite never trailing in the second half, the Quakers allowed the Lions to tie the game at 70-70 with 1:49 remaining.
From that point, Earlham hit 9-of-10 free throws to put the game out of reach.
Falling Behind
Earlham fell behind early in the contest as the Lions led until Bria Sneed hit a 3-pointer at the 14:04 mark of the first half to give the Quakers a 12-10 lead.
After that moment, the Quakers were able to work their way to a 16-point lead by the intermission.
It didn't take long for the Lions to get back into the contest during the second half as they closed the gap to 44-42 with 14:01 left to play.
The Quakers were able to bounce back to build a double-digit margin, but they couldn't keep the Lions from coming back until the final two minutes. Â
Sneed led the Quakers with 29 points to raise her career total to 1,107. She is still in sixth place on Earlham's all-time scoring list behind Tasha Merrill (2005-09), who has 1,201 points. She also topped the Quakers with eight rebounds and three steals.
Hannah Franklin added 10 points and a team-high six assists. Shania Feathers finished with 10 points.
Kasin Spay tossed in nine points, while Lexi McFarland had eight points.
Earlham (9-10, 5-7) are at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday. The HCAC contest starts at 7:30 p.m.
