INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. â€" Four in row for the Earlham College men's tennis team.
The Quakers defeated Transylvania University 5-1 on Sunday to claim their fourth straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament title.
Ranked No. 10 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Men's Central Region Poll, the Quakers (16-6) earn the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament that begins later this week. The pairings are expected to be announced on Monday.
Earlham led 2-1 after the doubles action, but the top-seeded Quakers needed a comeback to take the advantage over the No. 3 seeded Pioneers (8-7) at the West Indy Racquet Club.
Anton Bartashevich and Jack Ventura-Cruess took care of Josh Buckman and Robert Albrecht 8-2 at No. 1.
After Transylvania won in the third doubles spot, Phillip Locklear and Hank Levin trailed 7-4 in the match at No. 2 against Dylan Conner and Patrick Richardson.
The Earlham duo responded to tie the contest at 7-7 and eventually prevailed 9-8 (7-4) as they claimed the tiebreaker.
With the lead after doubles, all the Quakers needed was three wins in singles.
Locklear defeated Conner 6-0, 6-0 in the second position before Ventura-Cruess beat Richardson 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4.
Scott Lawrence clinched the win for the Quakers by defeating Stephen Mayborg 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5.
The win was the sixth in a row for the Quakers and the 41st straight over HCAC opponents since a regular season loss in 2011.
