Quakers Fall in Tight Contest

RICHMOND, Ind. â€" The Earlham College women's tennis team battled Capital on Sunday in a non-conference affair on the EC Courts as the Quakers fell 5-4.

Capital (1-3) led 2-1 after the doubles competition. Claire Welsh and Anna Gubanova beat Ashlin Gable and Julia Lucas 8-6 at No. 1 doubles for Earlham's win.

The Quakers won three singles contests and nearly picked up a fourth victory.

Welsh defeated Gable 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1. Gubanova took care of Lucas 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.

At No. 6, Arrita Domi beat Taylor Jenkins 6-1, 6-3.

In the closest match of the afternoon, Capital's Alyssa Trier defeated Ayami Shoji 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (12-10) at No. 4.

Earlham (2-6, 1-4) entertains Mount St. Joseph University on Wednesday. The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference match is at 4 p.m.
