TIFFIN, Ohio – Trailing by 20-plus points early, the Earlham College women's basketball team cut the deficit to seven points on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but hot shooting from three-point land gave Heidelberg an 82-68 victory over the Quakers on Monday.

Heidelberg got off to a quick start outscoring the Quakers 30-12 in the first quarter. The Student Princes would lead by as many as 23 in the second quarter, but Earlham cut the deficit to 19 points at halftime.

Earlham came out firing in the second half as the Quakers scored on three of their first four possessions. A jumper from sophomore Mariah Flynn with 1:36 remaining in the third quarter put Earlham in position to complete the comeback as the Quakers trailed 58-48.

In the fourth quarter, senior Kasin Spay got the Quakers within seven on two occasions, both with around six minutes to play in regulation. Heidelberg's outside shooting proved to be too much, however, as the Student Princes rattled home three of their 12 three-pointers to pull away.

Spay led the Quakers individually with 21 points on 8-18 shooting. Fellow senior Kiara Scott turned in a 14-point performance while junior Hannah Franklin was the other Quaker to finish in double figures with 10 points.

Heidelberg had four players score in double figures.

Earlham will play its home-opener on Friday as part of the 2015 Quaker Tournament. The Quakers will host Dominican (Ill.) at 7 p.m. with Olivet (Mich.) and Kenyon (Ohio) playing the first game at 5 p.m.
