Box Score SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – The Earlham College women's basketball team nearly pulled out a victory on two occasions, but Chapman University prevailed 91-87 in double overtime on Saturday evening.
Trailing by two with time in regulation winding down, junior Hannah Franklin was fouled on a three-point attempt as time expired. The Lynn, Ind., native calmly nailed the first two free throws, tying the game 75-75. Unfortunately for the Quakers, the third free throw rimmed out and the two teams headed to overtime.
The Panthers scored the first two baskets of the first overtime period, but the Quakers battled back to tie the game 83-83 when senior Kiara Scott hit a layup with 35 seconds to play. After a defensive stop, senior Kasin Spay's jumper from just inside the arc rimmed out, forcing a second overtime.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the second overtime. Chapman's Lesley Tan hit two free throws to give the Panthers a two-point edge, but sophomore Mariah Flynn responded with two free throws of her own to tie the game 85-85. The Panthers then hit six straight free throws to seal the win.
Flynn led all scorers with a career-high 27 points on 12-15 shooting from the field. The Kodak, Tenn., native recorded a double-double as well, grabbing 13 rebounds. Franklin and Spay were the other Quakers to finish in double figures with 16 and 10 points respectively.
Jamie Hum-Nishikado led the Panthers with 25 points off of the bench. Lauren Sato and Megan Charles added 19 and 18 points respectively for Chapman.
The Quakers held a 52-25 rebounding advantage, but turned the ball over 43 times. Both teams dished out 24 assists.
Earlham returns to action against host UC Santa Cruz at 8 p.m. (EST) tomorrow (Sunday).
