RICHMOND, Ind. – Manchester built an early lead and shot 59.3 percent from the field as the Spartans defeated the Earlham College women's basketball team 74-60 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action at Schuckman Court on Saturday.
Manchester outscored Earlham 20-10 in the first quarter and 19-7 in the second to build a 22-point edge going into halftime. After both teams scored 21 points in the third quarter, the Quakers forced the Spartans into 11 fourth-quarter turnovers as Earlham outscored its opposition 22-14 in the final 10 minutes of play.
Four Spartans finished in double figures with Justine Kruger leading the way with 19 points. Junior Hannah Franklin led Earlham with 11 points. Freshman Ashton Meadows finished with nine points and five rebounds in 15 minutes off of the bench.
As a team, Earlham shot 33.3 percent (20-60) from the field and 58. 3 percent (18-31) from the free throw line. The Quakers entered the game shooting 76.6 percent from the charity stripe, good for sixth in all of NCAA Division III.
Earlham did grab 37 rebounds compared to 33 for Manchester. The Quakers also grabbed 13 steals in the contest.
Not only did Manchester shoot well from the field, it also shot well from beyond the three-point arc, nailing 7-12 attempts.
The Quakers are back in action on Wednesday against Transylvania at Schuckman Court. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
