RICHMOND, Ind. – Transylvania's Rachel Cox connected on a jumper as time expired as the Pioneers stunned the Earlham College women's basketball team 75-73 at Schuckman Court in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday.
Trailing 73-67 with 19 seconds to play, senior Kasin Spay scored three of her 26 points to get Earlham within a single possession. After a timeout, the Quakers forced a five-second count and got the ball back with a chance to tie the contest. Sophomore Mariah Flynn did just that, netting a triple with seven seconds to play, tying the contest 73-73.
Then came Cox's jumper that gave the Pioneers the victory.
Transylvania led 17-14 in the waning seconds of the first quarter until Shawn Kolani banked in a long-distance heave from half court, giving the Pioneers a six-point edge. The Quakers would buckle down on defense in the second, however, allowing just 12 points while scoring 21 to take a two-point edge (35-33) into halftime.
The Pioneers would outscore the Quakers 20-14 in the third quarter to lead 52-49 after three. The entire fourth quarter was played within an eight-point window with Earlham leading by two on several occasions and Transylvania leading by six.
Spay finished with 26 points and three steals to lead Earlham. Hannah Franklin added 12 points, six assists, and three steals while junior Maya Luney also scored a dozen points while grabbing five rebounds in 15 minutes.
Katelyn Smith, who was held to just three points in the first half due to foul trouble, scored 25 of the Pioneers' 43 second-half points. In total, Smith led all scorers with 28 points.
Earlham forced Transylvania into 17 turnovers while only committing 11 as a team. The Pioneers, however, won the rebounding battle 39-29 including grabbing 20 offensive rebounds.
The Quakers return to action on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest at Franklin.
