Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Mariah Flynn led all scorers with 27 points, but the Transylvania Pioneers connected on 24-25 free throws and defeated the Earlham College women's basketball team 85-66 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) play on Wednesday.
Earlham led 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, but Transylvania opened the second quarter on a 20-6 run capped by a three-pointer from Celia Kline. The Quakers would get within six points at 39-33, but the Pioneers (7-5) scored the final four points of the first half.
Within the friendly confines of the Beck Center, Transylvania went on a 10-5 run to open the second half, making the score 53-38 with 6:55 to play in the third quarter. The Quakers got within a dozen points, but could get no closer.
Flynn finished with 25 points and five rebounds in 31 minutes. Senior Kasin Spay added 14 points and six assists while junior Hannah Franklin scored nine points, dished out seven assists, and grabbed four rebounds. With her 14-point effort, Spay moves into sixth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,210 career points. Spay needs just three points to pass her former teammate, Bria Sneed, for fifth all-time.
Four Pioneers finished in double figures with Lindsay Hieronymus leading the way with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Both teams shot over 40 percent with the Quakers knocking in 29 field goals compared to 27 for the Pioneers. Transylvania, however, connected on 24 free throw attempts while Earlham was just 4-6 in the contest.
The Quakers dished out a season-high 23 assists against committing just 10 turnovers. The Pioneers held a 42-28 rebounding edge.
Earlham returns to action on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off at Hanover.
