Transy's second quarter surge proves undoing for Earlham women's hoops

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ind. – Earlham College women's basketball stayed with visiting Transylvania University for three quarters and outplayed the Pioneers in two of those, however a rough second quarter proved to be the Quakers' undoing in a 62-49 loss on Wednesday night at the Druley Performance Gym.

After taking a 15-12 lead over Transylvania in the first quarter, Earlham (4-16, 4-9 Heartland) connected on just one field goal attempt in the second stanza. The Quakers were outscored 20-3 in that frame, and the Pioneers held a 32-18 lead heading into the halftime break.

Transylvania (15-5, 10-3 Heartland) extended its lead in the third quarter, and led by as many as 20, as late as the 1:05 mark of the frame after a Kerigan Davis layup.

The Quakers began to nibble into that Pioneer lead in the waning minutes of the third, thanks to a pair of Zoe Curtis (New Castle, Ind./New Castle) foul shots and a jumper by Kyndall Spears (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield). That successfully trimmed the Transy lead to 46-30 heading into the final quarter.

An 11-0 Earlham run in the fourth brought the Quakers to within eight, 52-44, with 2:42 remaining, and a Spears 3-pointer later in the period cut the difference to seven with 1:33 showing on the game clock. The Quakers would get no closer as the Pioneers went 6-of-6 at the free-throw line in the final minute to clinch the win.

Curtis and Spears each finished with 10 points, while Acacia Tenette (Sacramento, Calif./Highlands) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Shelby Boyle paced Transylvania with a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double, with Kristen Hayes chipping in 10 points.

The Quakers are at home for their next contest on Saturday, Feb. 3, when they host Franklin College. Tip-off at the Druley Performance Gym is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
