Women's hoops unleashes dominant performance on Manchester in 75-48 victory

RICHMOND, Indiana – Earlham College women's basketball put together its best performance of the season, and arguably its finest performance in Head Coach Shauna Watson's three seasons as head coach, with a 75-48 trouncing over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Manchester University, Saturday afternoon at the Druley Performance Gym

Eleven different players were involved in the scoring, led by senior Camryn White and junior Kayla Bowling with 13 points each, as the Quakers dominated nearly every column of the boxscore. Earlham charted a .476 field goal percentage (30-of-63) over Manchester, the Quakers' best shooting performance against an HCAC opponent since the 2015-16 season.

THE SHORT STORY

Leading 34-28 at the halftime break, Earlham toyed with Manchester for the first three minutes of the third quarter before finally putting away the Spartans. A Bowling jumper at the 5:57 mark of the frame extended Earlham's lead to 43-34 and launched a 13-1 run for the Quakers lasting four-and-a-half minutes. White's bucket with 2:14 showing on the third quarter clock capped the surge and left Earlham holding a 54-35 advantage, and the Quakers ended the frame with an 18-point lead.

Earlham was 9-of-18 (.500 FG pct.) from the floor in the decisive third quarter, while holding Manchester to a 2-of-12 shooting (.167 FG pct.) effort.

Back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by senior Amy Weisner, Bowling, and senior Kyra Joseph anchored an 11-0 Earlham run early in the fourth quarter and helped extend the Quakers' lead to 28 points, 68-40, on senior Maddy Krodel's jumper with 5:50 remaining.

Earlham drained a season-high 11 3-pointers on 22 attempts, led by Bowling, first years Neely Trenshaw and Halle Shipp, and junior Acacia Tenette with two each. The Quakers' 11 treys were the most since going 11-of-30 beyond the arc at Mount St. Joseph during the 2016-17 season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

After White and Bowling with 13 points each, three players chipped in with eight points apiece: Trenshaw, Tenette, and senior Zoe Curtis. First-year Trinity McClendon added seven points in the effort.

Tenette hauled down a team-high eight rebounds, leading an Earlham squad that dominated the boards, 34-25. The Quakers finished with 15 offensive rebounds to the Spartans' six. Tenette also dished out a team-high six assists and charted three steals.

Earlham committee just 16 turnovers while forcing Manchester into 24 giveaways, leading to 22 Quaker points. The Quakers also amassed 26 assists – most under third-year Shauna Watson – on its 30 field goals made, and Earlham's 17 steals against Manchester were third-most in the Watson era.

Defensively, Earlham held Manchester to 40.5 percent (17-of-42) shooting from the floor. Sophomore Macy Miller paced Manchester with 17 points, while Hannah Lindsey tacked on 11 points for the Spartans.

WHAT'S NEXT

Earlham women's basketball will open a run of three-straight conference road games, starting Wednesday, Jan. 15, when the Quakers travel to Bluffton University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Earlham will also face Hanover and Defiance in HCAC road action, before returning to the Druley Performance Gym on Saturday, Jan. 25, against Franklin College.
