Women's basketball falls to #6 Transylvania

RICHMOND, Indiana – Sixth-ranked Transylvania University dominated Earlham College women's basketball in the opening quarter and never looked back on its way to a 75-42 win over the Quakers, Wednesday night at the Druley Performance Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The visiting Pioneers held a 21-6 lead over the Quakers after the first 10 minutes of play, including three 3-pointers by Transy's Shelby Boyle. The frame ended with a nine-point run by the Pioneers.

Transylvania's lead quickly reached 24 points, 30-6, early in the second quarter, before Earlham answered with a six-point run on buckets by Trinity McClendon, Rosie Newhart, and Amy Weisner. The Quakers closed out the half with a Kayla Bowling jumper and a trey from Cambie Poole, resulting in a 39-20 Pioneer lead at the intermission.

Transy outscored Earlham 20-11 in the third quarter on 64.3 percent (9-of-14) shooting from the field, extending the Pioneers' lead to 59-31 through 30 minutes of play. The margin did not get any narrower in the fourth quarter, with Transylvania's lead reaching 30 points on a Dasia Thornton layup with 3:14 remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

First year Cambie Poole led Earlham with 10 points and six rebounds off the bench, while McClendon finished the night with nine points.

Earlham shot 25.0 percent (17-of-68) from the field to Transy's 45.3 percent (29-of-64), and the Pioneers outrebounded the Quakers, 51-38.

Three Pioneers scored in double figures, led by Boyle's 24 points with eight rebounds and nine assists. Thornton and Ashton Woodard tallied 12 and 10 points respectively.

Earlham women's basketball continues its four-game home stand on Saturday, Nov. 8, when it hosts Hanover College. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
