RICHMOND -- The Earlham College volleyball team picked up its first win over Transylvania since joining the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in 2010. The Quakers won the match in three sets of play.
The Quakers improved to 14-3 (3-1 HCAC) while the Pioneers fell to 13-10 (3-1 HCAC).
Maria Young paced the Earlham offense with 16 kills. The sophomore from Bedford, Va. attacked at a .333 clip and recorded one ace and two blocks on the evening.
Caroline Mulvihill and
Erin Wagner both collected a team-high 17 digs, with Wagner also setting up 32 assists.
While Earlham took comfortable 25-18 wins in both of the first two sets, the Pioneers would not leave Druley Performance Gym lying down.
After a libero change for set three, Transy stayed closer in competition through most of the set. With the score at 21-17, the Pioneers went on a 5-0 run to recover their deficit and take the lead 22-21. Undeterred, Earlham quickly reached match point. Two quick kills from the visitors forced extra points to be played in what would become the final frame. The teams traded points until Earlham finally managed to score consecutively on an attack error from Transy and a kill from
Giselle Mora to end the deadlock at 28-26.
The Quakers travel to Anderson on Saturday to continue HCAC competition. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
