RICHMOND -- The Earlham College volleyball team won a 5-set thriller against Mount St. Joseph University in Druley Performance Gym on Saturday afternoon. Junior setter
Erin Wagner broke the school record for assists in a game in the contest and multiple Quaker's recorded career-high kills.
Earlham improves to 12-4 and is 1-0 in HCAC play. The Lions dropped to 10-6. 0-1 HCAC.
Wagner continued her impressive season at setter with 71 assists, breaking the school record for assists in a game. She broke the previous record by 10 assists.
"We played a tough, hard fought match but this is what we train for." said Wagner. "I am extremely proud of my team for pulling in the extra 1% to pull this win out and thanks to them, I was able to beat the assist per match record."
Sarah Dickman and
Giselle Mora led the Quakers with 22 kills each, both career high marks for the two seniors.
Maria Young also recorded a high-kill game with her tally of 20, one off of her career-best.

Jennifer Shamel recorded 21 digs from the back line. Young, Wagner and
Caroline Mulvihill all collected 19 digs.
Each of the first four sets went to extra points, the Quakers had an 8-1 run midway through the first set to retake the lead from MSJ. The run was started by a kill from Mulvihill and consisted of five Earlham kills.
Leading 7-5, Earlham had a 6-1 run and a 5-0 run shortly after to take a 15-8 lead in the set. The Quakers led 20-12 late in the set, but a 12-4 run from the visitors forced the set to extra points with the momentum with the Lions.
A strong start to set three saw the Quakers lead 6-3 early on. Trailing 17-13, the Lions strung together a six-point run with all six points coming from kills. A late surge from Earlham forced extra points in the set but the Lions held out to take the set win.
Neither team was able to take a lead of more than three points in the fourth set. With Mount St. Joseph leading 24-22, the Quakers had a 5-1 run to equal the score and take the win in extra points.
A 4-0 run and a 3-0 run early in the final set put Earlham in a good position in the final set, but the Lions were still determined to make the home team earn the win. A 6-3 run late in the set pressured Earlham late in the match, with the Quakers putting away the final score with a kill from Dickman.
Earlham will continue conference action at Hanover on Wednesday. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
