Volleyball toppled in 5-set battle

HANOVER -- The Earlham College volleyball team competed in its second consecutive 5-set match on Wednesday evening. The Quakers fell to Hanover College after having a slow start and fighting back into contention.

Earlham falls to 12-5 (1-1 HCAC) while Hanover improves to 10-7 (2-0 HCAC).

Giselle Mora and Olivia Kyrk paced the Earlham offense with 16 and 12 kills respectively. Kyrk led the Quakers with a .370 clip.

Libero Jennifer Shamel collected 44 digs from the back line.

Reigning HCAC Offensive Player of the Week, Erin Wagner threw up 46 assists and three serving aces.

Sidney Fuller tallied six blocks on the evening to lead the Quakers defensively. Maria Young got a hand in on four blocks.

Earlham struggled with a low attacking percentage in the first two sets and got behind the Panthers early in both sets.

The third set was a turning point for the Quakers. For the first time in the match, they stayed in contention through the early points of the set and kept the score close heading into the final points. Trailing 19-18, the Quakers pulled together a -0 run with Shamel serving to cement a lead in the set.

The fourth set was dominated by Earlham. With a 6-0 run early in the set, a 5-1 run midway through, and a 4-0 run to end the set, the Quakers led virtually from start to finish.

Hanover jumped ahead early in the final set, the Panthers led by a score of 6-2 in the early stages. Earlham worked to chisel away at the early deficit, but ran out of time to close the gap as Hanover took the 15th and final point of the set with a kill.

Earlham will continue HCAC play at home on Saturday against Manchester. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Druley Performance Gym.
