RICHMOND -- The Earlham College women's soccer team battled Transylvania University to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of play in Matlack-Messer Stadium.
The Quakers move to 3-9-1 (2-4-1 HCAC) while the Pioneers are now 7-6-2 (2-4-1 HCAC) on the 2021 season.
Earlham took more shots in the first half than the visiting squad (8-5) but Transy was piling pressure on goalkeeper
Becca Hancock from the early goings. A cross in the 19th minute found the head of an attacking Pioneer who connected on the cross, but the shot was just high and hit the crossbar.
Tansy attempted 11 shots in the second half compared to four for Earlham in the period. The Pioneers were battling until the end of 90 minutes for their go-ahead goal, taking four shots in the final four minutes of the frame.
The Quakers played a conservative and defensive overtime game. Head coach
Lydia Harvey scaled back the offensive efforts to preserve the shutout and still escape with the tie at the end of the game. The Quakers were mostly playing from inside their own defensive area in the extra minutes, but were successful in stopping the Pioneers.
Both teams ended the match with nine shots on goal, but the Quakers were out-shot 24-13 in total shots.
Tess Cunningham led Earlham with four shots, two of which were placed on frame. The Pioneers led the corner kick battle 9-1.
Reigning HCAC Defensive Player of the Week, Hancock made nine saves in goal.
Earlham will be back in action on Saturday as the Quaker soccer teams host Mount St. Joseph for Pride Games. The women's game is slated for 1 p.m. in Matlack-Messer Stadium.
