RICHMOND – After 20+ point performances from
Kolden Vanlandingham and
Jaden Terry, the Earlham College men's basketball team defeated Berea College 86-65 in Druley Performance Gym on Wednesday evening.
The Quakers improved to 2-6 (0-3 HCAC) while the Mountaineers dropped to 4-6 (0-1 USA South).
Vanlandingham led the way with 23 points, six rebounds and one steal while Terry recorded a career-high 20 points with six boards and two steals.
Josh Ozanne also hit double digit points with 13 while pacing the Quakers in rebounds with eight.
It was not all smooth sailing for Earlham, as the Quakers struggled with accuracy in the first half. Trailing 10-9 with 14:08 remaining in the first frame, the Quakers gave up a 7-0 run to trail 17-9. The Quakers found some footing after the run as Terry scored 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions for Earlham.
While the Mountaineers led for the remainder of the half, Earlham kept the lead within seven points for the duration, and ended the frame with a 5-0 run in the final two minutes.
After a 35-33 deficit going into halftime, the Quakers went to work in the second half. A layup by
Chase Younts gave the home squad a 37-36 lead with 18:38 remaining in the contest.
Earlham led by as many as four points, but the Mountaineers tied the score again at 49 at the 13:19 mark of the second half. After another Terry 3-pointer, the Quaker offense exploded for a 14-2 run with 3-pointers made on four consecutive possessions.
A 3-pointer from Vanlandingham with 5:43 remaining in the game kicked off a 15-4 run for Earlham. Leading 82-63 with just under two minutes left, the Quakers rotated players in and garnered valuable experience for the future of the program.
The Quakers shot 21-of-32 in the second half and made 8-of-11 3-point attempts in the period. Earlham dominated the turnover battle, scoring 15 of its points off of possession changes. Despite the two high-scoring performances, the Quakers spread the ball around well and saw 21 points come from non-starters on the evening.
Earlham will be back in action on Saturday when Kenyon College comes for a visit in Druley Performance Gym as the HCAC winter break continues.
