TERRE HAUTE – The Earlham College men's basketball team led at halftime but ultimately fell to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening. The game honored former coach and player John Mutchner, who is a member of both institutions' Athletic Hall of Fame.
The Quakers fell to 1-5 (0-2 HCAC) while the Fightin' Engineers improved to 5-2 (2-0 HCAC).
Tommy Makabu led in scoring with 14 points while a trio of Quakers ended the night with 11.
Chase Younts recorded a team-high seven boards with six points.
The Quakers got off to a hot start with a 12-5 run out of the gates. Undeterred, the Engineers came back with a 14-7 run to level the score at 19 with 6:57 remaining in the first half.
Tommy Makabu turned a 3-point play with a layup and bonus shot, then made both free throws off a shooting foul, and closed the half out with a 3-pointer to give the Quakers a 31-24 lead going into the half.
A quick 9-1 run for Rose-Hulman saw the Engineers take a one-point lead 3:28 into the second frame. The Quakers responded with a 7-0 run to retake the lead and open a slight gap. Trailing 46-42 with 8:43 remaining, Rose-Hulman scored a 17-2 run over the next 4:32. Earlham gave up four turnovers during the run and shot 1-for-5.
The Quakers now trailed 58-51 with just over four minutes remaining in the game. A 3-pointer from
Zachariah Andre kickstarted a 7-2 run for the Quakers but they were held scoreless in the final two minutes as the Engineers took their second conference win of the season.
Earlham hits the road again on Saturday for more HCAC action against the Ravens of Anderson University. Tip-off is slated for 1 pm.
